The Nashville Entrepreneur Center (EC) announced today that longtime health care leader and entrepreneur Michael R. Burcham has been named its new president, effective Monday, July 5. His selection ends a six-month search that attracted 90 applicants from across the nation.

Currently, Burcham serves as a clinical faculty member at Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management. He has been instrumental in leading Vanderbilt’s successful Summer Business Institute, an intense month-long program that immerses college students and recent graduates in a competitive business environment and engages the business community by giving students real challenges from top local and national companies. Burcham also teaches entrepreneurial courses for Vanderbilt and has mentored numerous entrepreneurs in Nashville over the last decade.  He writes a blog for entrepreneurs at www.michaelburcham.com.

“This is a great day for the Entrepreneur Center and for Nashville,” said EC Chairman Clayton McWhorter, founder of Clayton Associates, LLC. “Our board of directors set out to identify a strong, strategic and passionate leader, and after carefully considering an impressive pool of candidates, we wholeheartedly believe Michael Burcham is the right person for the job. Under his leadership, we are confident the EC will be a strong catalyst for entrepreneurial activity in our city.”

The EC’s search committee developed a list of key attributes to evaluate the candidates. Those attributes included: the ability to provide strategic leadership and vision; a track record of success as an entrepreneur or advocate; strong relationships within the Nashville entrepreneurial community; specific knowledge of operations, financial reporting, budgeting and fundraising; the ability to manage staff and resources effectively; the ability to plan, manage, prioritize and implement multiple tasks concurrently; and outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.

“The Nashville Entrepreneur Center is focused on helping entrepreneurs thrive in Nashville,” said EC board member Mike Shmerling, chairman of Choice Food Group, Inc. and XMi Holdings, Inc. “Michael’s experience and passion for entrepreneurship brings new energy and a credible voice to help lead this charge.”

Burcham has nearly 30 years of professional and leadership experience, most of which was spent in the health care industry. Prior to his work at Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management, he served as president of ParadigmHealth, an integrator of disease and care management solutions for medically complex and catastrophic events, from 2001 to 2007. He served as a professor of managerial studies at Vanderbilt University from 2003 to 2007; as president of Theraphysics Corp from 1993-2001; as vice president of managed care at HCA Centennial Medical Center from 1987-1992; and as regional coordinator of physical therapy services at National HealthCorp, L.P. from 1983-1987.

Burcham received a doctorate in health administration from the Medical University of South Carolina, a master’s degree in business administration from Belmont University and a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

“Nashville has provided me the opportunity to develop myself as an entrepreneur. The creative energy and business talent in this city is just amazing. I look forward to working with the people of this great community to help turn ideas into successful businesses,” Burcham said.
