Solidus
Healthcare Services and IT
The healthcare industry represents 18% of US GDP and is the largest industry in our immediate region. This creates a large opportunity for us to invest in companies that are engaged in developing solutions for the healthcare industry. Our long experience in healthcare investing allows us to navigate the complex risks of this industry. We have developed a well-defined strategy and clear guidelines as to the type of risks Solidus will undertake.
Solidus is orientated toward innovative, cost efficient and asset-light business models within healthcare that seek to generate economic returns based on assuming and overcoming such risks. We are uncomfortable with the risks that are outside our circle of competence such as government reimbursement trends, FDA approval process, or R&D projects. As such, Solidus will not assume these risk factors.
There are large trends in the healthcare industry that will give rise to exciting investment opportunities over the next few years. The first of these is the repurposing of technology from other industries for use in healthcare. This enables greater levels of efficiency within hospital / provider segments. Also, we see a necessary trend toward greater consumer responsibility for healthcare decisions. For this reason, we are interested in tools that can be used to empowering consumers to make better informed healthcare decisions.
Applied Technology
Information Technology is a critical business factor in almost every sector of the economy. We focus investments in this sector on businesses that apply existing technology to new industries or novel utilizations. We do not invest in commercializing basic research or unproven technological innovations.
Information Services and Media
We like the basic economics of information services businesses and media businesses with propriety content. Our strategy is premised on the view that the rapid, technology driven changes occurring in these markets will lead to numerous attractive investment opportunities. We believe that these disruptive
market changes have created opportunities to build smaller, more flexible companies with business models that emphasize proprietary content and data acquisition, organization and presentation. A few of the trends in which Solidus is most interested include the explosion of available digital bandwidth, proprietary data acquisition methods and the desire of information overwhelmed consumers for "expert curator moderated" content.
Fully Developed, Systematic Process
For over two decades, the principals of Solidus have been helping entrepreneurs to turn visionary concepts into significant enterprises and transformative companies. This effort is not simple or straightforward. Solidus understands that the process of identifying small, high-potential companies, mentoring the founders, and building an enterprise into a large, transformational company takes longer and is more complex than many investors expect. We take a long-term, holistic approach to the process of building companies. Deal review and investment is only the starting point of the process - not the end. Developing the right management team is a critical component in building a great company, but not by itself sufficient. Solidus has positioned all of the necessary services to provide support and assistance to entrepreneurs during each stage of the portfolio company's development. This simultaneously creates goodwill with management teams, increases the portfolio companies' odds of success and improves returns to our investors.
Diversity
Solidus Company, our four investment funds and our portfolio companies' odds, in which we invest, shall strive to maximize the participation of minority-owned businesses and woman-owned businesses to reflect the racial, ethnic and gender diversity of Tennessee's population. Additionally, all of our related entities are equal opportunity employers and does not discriminate in employment or investment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, citizenship status, age, disability, political affiliation or belief.
